Folk Rock / Indie / Pop

The band, fronted by Polish singer/songwriter Olenka Krakus, has a sound that mingles a strong Eastern European influence with elements of North American country and folk music. The band's diverse instruments (cello, violin, accordion, trumpet, saxophone, lap steel, mandolin and glockenspiel) provide a unique musical backdrop to Olenka's sophisticated, often narrative, form of songwriting. Influenced by her memories of Communist Poland and by the country's folklore, Olenka investigates themes of social injustice and personal responsibility, populating her songs with melancholy outcasts from both Polish and Canadian landscapes. O&AL’s music has been compared to that of Beirut, The Decemberists, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Cat Power, Gillian Welch, Gogol Bordello, Lhasa, and Tom Waits.

Hailed as “one of finest new songwriters in Canada,” (Tom Power, CBC) singer-songwriter Gabrielle Papillon sings stories real and imagined. Words, melancholy melodies, and lush harmonies are her currency.

"Pour comprendre l'univers poétique qui berce la création de cette auteure-compositrice-interprète, vous pourriez vous replonger dans les décors pittoresques des romans de John Steinbeck, avec The Grapes of Wrath (Les raisins de la colère) et Of Mice and Men (Des souris et des hommes), par exemple. Cette artiste aime bien s'inspirer du siècle passé pour mieux interpréter ce qui l'entoure aujourd'hui." - Antoine Léveillée (Voir Montréal)

Jane Ehrhardt writes touching, poetic songs that are charged with critical observations, dreams, memories, hopes and reveries. Few people can remain indifferent when she delivers them with her deep, rich voice. As a solo performer, she can bring a room to a hushed standstill as the crowd hangs on to each well-placed note and word. With her band, she takes listeners through a whirlwind of emotions and sounds, ranging from folk-rock to soul and from country-bluegrass to lullabies.
